Canvas

Canvas prints has been around and hanging on our walls for centurys, if its not an old work of art painted on a more traditional piece of canvas then its a more modern work of art or indeed a canvas print from photos or some kind of design that has been printed onto canvas because you can get the sort of canvas that you paint on and you can also get the sort of canvas that you print on which is called inject canvas which is mostly used for printing on with large format or indeed small printers which is commonly used for photographers and artists alike.

There is lots of ideas you can gain from having canvas photo printing as an option when you what to print allot of photos on canvas for a surprise present and really just want to give someone something very special then what you could do is print all of your friends and family associated with some kind of occasion then you could give that away as a gift and Im sure they would be over the moon with the idea and the finish that you get from having some personal photos printed on canvas.

In this current interior climate I would say that we would really miss the benefits that a canvas print has to offer as yes we all love to put our photos in a normal photo frame which is the more traditional way to hang or most favourite images and photos and even these days you can get picture frames that have a different look to them to but if you was to think of a world without canvas prints then there wouldnt be a away to express art and at a fast and quality fashion, basically you can paint a picture of a photo but this takes time and what if you wanted sell lots of your artwork but with it taking a long time to paint each canvas painting then your customers would be waiting a long time to which is where I would recommend that if you do have any of your friends and family or even a client awaiting for a painting form you then why not offer them the option of having your artwork printed on canvas then they could purchase from yourself at a reduced price and then you could made a small profit from it to without having to actually painting it again.

The good thing about being able to choose any finish and size of canvas print is that you can have it pretty much tailor made to how you want it and at what size you want it to. Lets say you have a large photo or poster that you want to hang up but its far too big for the wall space that its going to be hanging on, all you need to do is send it of to be printed and the canvas printer can print at a much smaller size for you and not only that bit it will be on a canvas print which has a better feel to it than you would from something that is kept in a draw because it was too big to hang up, also Vic versa you can get a small image printed onto a large image which normally tends to be the most popular of options as some people tend to want the original photos that they have had kept away for a while that they would love to have blown up, that the beauty of canvas printing as the ideas and ways of printing images and photos to canvas is very limitless.

Castles in Cornwall

There are quite a lot of castles within the boundaries of what is modern-day Cornwall. Much of the reason for this is geography - Cornwall has a lot of coastline (just short of 300 miles) and this means potential avenues of attack from the sea. This meant a lot of coastal defences have been put in place over the years. The south coast of Cornwall faces the English Channel and attacks from Europe; the north coast faces the Atlantic and invasions across the Irish Sea.

Not all of the castles in Cornwall are coastal however, there are a few (generally older castles) that are built to protect different aspects. These include Norman installations to protect river crossings and Iron Age hill forts to protect the population and act as a defensive refuge, which are generally found on hill top locations.

Because the wealth of Cornwall has never really been in agricultural land, there are not as many Norman castles as some other areas of the country because that was the primary driver for installing these defences.

St Mawes Castle

St Mawes sits on the north east side of the Carrick Roads, partnering Pendennis castle on the opposite side. It is a clover leaf shape and was built by Henry VIII as part of the coastal defences aimed at preventing attack from France and Spain.

Carn Brea Castle

Carn Brea was built in the 14th century, although the hill top site near Redruth has been occupied since about 3700BC. The current building is a stone twin towered fortress, probably originally a chapel or hunting lodge. It has been altered and extended over the intervening years.

St Michael Mount

Located in Mount Bay and owned by the National Trust, St Michael Mount is probably Cornwall best known landmark. The castle sits atop a small island that is accessible by causeway at low tide. Originally a religious site it was held defensively several times before becoming a true castle when Henry VIII seized it as a result of the dissolution of the monasteries.

Tintagel Castle

The castle at Tintagel is probably best known for its link with the Arthurian legend as the birthplace of King Arthur. However, the current castle at the site near Camelford is the remains of a fortress built by the Earls of Cornwall, started by Reginald in 1145 and expanded in the 13th century.

Launceston Castle

The castle is located to protect the Tamar River crossing, and there has been defensive structures here since medieval times. The stonework you see today is mostly 13th century, built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall (who was also responsible for the expansion of Tintagel).

Pendennis Castle

Situated on Pendennis Point, this castle guards the Falmouth bank of the Carrick Roads and the entrance into Falmouth Harbour. As with St Mawes it was constructed around 1540-45 by Henry VIII as part of a chain of defences along the south coast of England.

Restormel Castle

Situated near St Austell, Restormel Castle was originally a Normal fortification, and it beautiful round shape is a reflection of that, although the current stone walls were again a later addition of the 13th century.

St Catherine Castle

Located at Fowey, St Catherine was built to defend the harbour and was a part of the south coast castle chain commissioned by Henry VIII. It a small artillery fort, now in ruins, and is located on the tip of a rock headland.

Chun Castle

An Iron Age hill fort originally created between 3000 and 2000 BC, it is notable because it is made of two concentric rings of the native granite rock. The occupation of this site near Penzance in west Cornwall, goes from this period through the Roman occupation of Britain into the Dark Ages.

This is not an exhaustive list of the castles of Cornwall, more minor or iron age remains can be seen at Bossiney Castle, Bottreaux Castle, Caerhays Castle, Cradinham Castle, Castle Dore, and the castles of Helston, Maen, Pengersick and Tremanton.

Designing a Veranda

The veranda is back in fashion, although many would say it has never lost its appeal to those in the know. As people choose more and more to stay in their home and shape it to the lifestyle instead of moving, the veranda is a cost-effective way to make a change that is enjoyable to use and beautiful to look at.

If you're interested in making such a change to your home, this article offers a brief look at the range of possibilities currently available for the design of your veranda. It is important to note that whilst many veranda builds do not require planning permission, you should always check first. A reputable builder will know the regulations and be able to tell you when they give you a quote, as well as offer advice as to how you might design and locate your veranda to definitely avoid planning permission.

Traditional Designs If you have a more traditional home then you may want to blend the veranda to fit with the original aspect. To achieve this you can combine slender columns, frieze panels and brackets with glass roof panels. A frieze panel here would be a decorative metal panel running along underneath the lower edge of the roof, having a slightly similar appearance to a decorative metal panel in a gate.

Contemporary Even with an older home, a contemporary look can add interesting contrast. Here, minimalist is the key word. Gone are the frieze panels and slender columns, but the use of metal remains. Only here to achieve a more modern appearance, the glass roof panels can be finished with a simple lower edge and more solid columns.

Lean-to This is a phrase you will hear frequently in veranda design. It is borrowed from the small cabins that now are most familiar in the American wilderness parks, such as the Adirondacks in up-state New York. They are structures made up mostly of a single roof, which leans against a back wall with no front elevation. They beautifully describe many veranda designs as the roof leans against the existing property, with columns only along the front to give support. The long line of the roof edge is parallel to that of the existing property.

Hipped Lean-to The term 'hipped' refers to a type of roof design, which is also sometimes called a pavilion roof. Here, the veranda's roof can resemble a canopy or gazebo, with four sides reaching in the same pitch to the top. The lean-to term refers here to the veranda resting against the side of the property, but the roof design is more complex and, as a result, more interesting.

Gabled Design The roof of these verandas more closely resembles that of a regular roofing design, where two sides of the pitched roof have gables at the sides. Here, though, the gable would be in glass and follow the same lower edge of the veranda roof as a whole, rather than being part of the wall in a regular building. This type of veranda would emerge out from the property, with its long edge at a right-angle, rather than following the existing wall of the home.

There are many other variations that then emerge from these core designs, but the message is clear that whilst the veranda is an old idea that's making a return, it's back in many new and different ways. A reputable builder of verandas will be able to talk you through each of these different options and advise on what's best suited for your home.

Dispelling some Fallacies

Dispelling some fallacies.

I was chatting to an office worker friend of mine yesterday and it started coming across that she was actually quite sorely jealous of me both as a happily married woman (she is going through a divorce) and as a work at home mom. She seemed to think that I spend all day playing with my children. Now one of the reasons this attitude irritates me highly is that I know I spend more time working now than I ever did at any office.

Marriage aside, I know many if not all work at home moms have come across this attitude during their work at home careers. Nonetheless, I was quite bemused by my friend's attitude. Now I have a number of unpleasant, stressful issues at the moment myself that I am trying to resolve, but it would never ever cross my mind to say to someone "my problems are greater than yours". I believe that all problems are relative and everybody has different things to cope with. Nobody can judge another's problems until they've walked a mile inthat person's shoes.

But after this friend had almost trivialised what I was saying, the age old "you're so lucky, you get to spend time with your children", came up.

Undeniably there are advantages to working from home, and it's a choice that I made after due consideration. But I have yet to have one successful work at home mom tell me that she is regularly able to spend more time or even quality time with her children. I'm also yet to encounter the successful work at homer who sleeps until 11 am, gets out of bed at 12 and may put in a few hours of work in the afternoon. If you work from home and are successful at it, you're pulling 12 and 13 hour days regularly, and 18 hour days when the need arises. And weekends and public holidays - what are those? I work in South Africa for international clients. They don't have the same public holidays as us and don't care if we are having a public holiday. Two weeks leave? What's that? If I want time off I have to arrange it weeks in advance and then it's not always possible as my clients actually need me to work - they don't have stopgap people who can pick up the fall. And there's no such thing as paid leave. We get burnout, we get repetitive stress injuries and frozen shoulders - and we can't take time off to recover. I'm not denying that office work is also very hard or that there are some undeniable advantages in what we do - we don't commute or pay for childcare. But there are advantages in office work too. You have a regular salary and you have a knock off time. I'm not complaining about it - those of us who choose to work from home know all this before we begin. But weigh up the pros and cons of what you want to do - and give us work at homers our dues.

Office workers, if you want to work from home because you want to spend more time with your kids or think that it's going to give you more freedom, then in my opinion transcription and virtual assistance are not the fields for you - and neither, probably, is any work from home job. If however, you want to work from home because you are entrepreneurial, like to type and are customer driven, and are prepared to put in the hours, then yes I'd recommend it.
